- Title
ARCHITECTURAL PAINT RESEARCH IN THE VYBORG LIBRARY: PRELIMINARY EXAMINATIONS.
- Authors
Polman, Mariël
- Abstract
The article focuses on the architectural paint research which aims to discover Finnish architect Alvar Aalto's original color scheme in designing the Viipuri Library in Vyborg, Russia in 1935. It examines the paint scrapes and samples of the paint layers taken at different locations in the modern building. It stresses the significance of the technical paint investigation in establishing relevant data characteristics such as the authentic pigments and binding agents, as well as the texture and application. The result of the analysis indicates that the original scheme on the stucco wall of the corridor has an off-white paint, with a yellowish top layer consisting of chalk, brown-yellow ochre and organic black pigment.
