- Title
CLARKSVILLE: AN AUSTIN FREEDMEN'S COMMUNITY.
- Authors
Mears, Michelle M.
- Abstract
The article presents information on Clarksville, an Austin, Texas freedmen's community established by ex-slave Charles Clark in 1871. Following the Civil War freedmen's communities were established throughout Austin, Texas, but all of these have since been absorbed by the city. Clarksville maintained its identity into the 20th century, in part, based on a 1928 city plan that encouraged the city's black citizens to move into East Austin. The article provides information on Austin's post-Civil War history and how newly freed slaves adapted to the city.
