Abstract
Many aspects of photography were in flux at the end of the last century. Hand-manipulated printing techniques that made each photograph unique were much prized by the aesthetic movement; at the same time, however, the advent of the family snapshot brought photography into everyday life. Camera design, too, influenced the content and structure of the photograph, and factory photo processing opened the way for practically everyone to make and own photographs.
