- Abstract
The article explores the regicide of King Charles I of Great Britain in polemical literature, focusing particularly on royalists authors Claudius Salmasius (1588-1653) and Sir Robert Filmer, as well as Commonwealth supporter John Milton. Topics considered include the nature of the state, the masculinity and ethics of competing political systems, and British national identity and patriotism. Other subjects explored include paternalism, citizenship, propaganda, English military and political leader Oliver Cromwell, and the English Civil War.
