- Abstract
This article, titled "Roles of Erythrocytes in Human Health and Disease 2.0," explores the various factors that influence red blood cell (RBC) biology, including COVID-19 infection, sickle cell disease, preeclampsia, reactive oxygen species, glucose control, favism, and the tumor microenvironment. The collection of 11 papers in this special issue aims to understand the underlying mechanisms and consequences of these influences on RBC function and physiology through a multidisciplinary approach. The studies included in this issue investigate topics such as the impact of COVID-19 on RBC aggregation, the biophysical profiling of sickle cell disease, and the influence of preeclampsia on neonatal erythrocyte characteristics. Overall, this special issue advances our understanding of the complex influences on RBC biology and their implications for human health and disease management.
