- Title
The Custody Crucible: The Development of Scientific Authority About Gay and Lesbian Parents.
- Authors
GEORGE, MARIE-AMÉLIE
- Abstract
The article discusses the significance of scientific authority in child custody cases involving gay and lesbian parents in the U.S. since the 1973 decision by the group the American Psychiatric Association (APA) to declassify homosexuality as a mental illness. According to the article, the APA decision led to court battles that ultimately benefited gay fathers and lesbian mothers. It also examines how courts can lead to social change and the role of custody cases upon scientific research on the significance of parental homosexuality on child sexual development and gender identity.
