- Abstract
Previous studies have demonstrated that collective efficacy is positively related to performance-oriented behaviors in sport such as team performance (Feltz & Lirgg, 1998; Myers et al., 2004). However, collective efficacy beliefs are also posited to influence group cognitions and affective reactions including the attributions that a team ascribes for successes and failures (George & Feltz, 1995). The purpose of this study was to explore relationships among collective efficacy, subjective interpretations of success/failure, and team-referent causal attributions. Participants included 71 high school athletes who were members of 20 track relay teams. Prior to a selected competition, participants completed a collective efficacy questionnaire, and a team attribution measure was administered immediately following the race. A multilevel modeling approach was employed to analyze collective efficacy as an athlete level perception and as a shared team belief. Results indicated that individual perceptions of attainment significantly predicted the locus of causality and stability dimensions, whereas aggregated collective efficacy emerged as a significant team level predictor of average stability. Furthermore, individual perceptions of collective efficacy were significantly related to team control and this relationship was moderated by team gender. The results are discussed in terms of their applied and measurement implications for understanding the collective efficacy-team attribution relationship in sport.
