- Abstract
The article explores the examination of hermaphrodites by anatomists in the late 17th and early eighteenth centuries which constituted a type of human experimentation. Topics include William Harvey's historical method of research, the techniques used to examine hermaphrodites, and the identity of hermaphrodites. Also discussed are how the examination was deemed indecent and unseemly, boundaries between observation and intervention, and anatomist James Douglas' work on hermaphrodites.
