- Title
A parallel universe: Challenges for an international journal based in Russia.
- Abstract
Key points: Editing a Russian journal revealed differences in scientific behaviour, particularly around plagiarism. All editorial efforts to develop a high quality journal can be rapidly dismantled by external forces and world politics. The Ukrainian invasion is likely to return Russian science to the isolation of 40 years ago.The ability of journals to operate independently is heavily influenced by national and international politics which pose an existential threat to journals.Academic journals can be used as a means of exercising soft political power and the ability of editors to circumnavigate or challenge this are severely limited.
