- Authors
Mallinson, G.
- Abstract
The main purpose of this article is to investigate certain aspects of conjoined sentence structure in English. In particular, strings that can be seen to deviate to varying degrees from the normal rules of conjoining. This will necessitate some discussion of precisely what constitutes a non-deviant case of joining. Various categories of deviation are also examined and, finally, some basic principles arising from the discussion are listed. These principles, it is felt, govern not only the occurrence of deviant cons joined structures but also help to explain why deviation is tolerated at all.
