- Abstract
In his paper, the author analyses a complex non-material (cultural) interaction on the historic Silk Road that appears to be very complex and unprecedented. To the impressive material exchange, based mainly on trade, the Silk Road inspires the today's Chinese Belt and Road Initiative. Especially important for the author is the fact that the economic mechanism of trade, which was the main driving force of the ancient trade route, has potentially become the proposed, alternative development path for humanity, where tradition, resulting from the cult of violence, was in fact a virtually uninterrupted string of wars and conquests. The outlining of main elements of the Initiative, announced by President Xi Jinping in 2013, is used by the author to compare the profile of this modern project with the unprecedented historical achievements of its historic predecessor. The questions are asked about - among other things - the most important lessons from the past, conclusions and inspirations for the modern initiative. Contemporary China would like to seal its to-date globalisation success in the field of production and trade with the gigantic project of Belt and Road with the aim to create a new infrastructure for transportation and trade on the truly global scale. In the long run, this could even lay the groundwork for the new world order, which - paradoxically - could contain certain adjustments to the order conceived by the West, which has opened the way to the top for China.
