- Abstract
The historiography of deaf education reveals that, throughout history, several methods aimed at teaching Portuguese in Brazil have been implemented, related to the historical context in which they are inserted. While some methodologies favored the teaching of oral language because it is believed that speech would enable the integration of the deaf subject as a useful element of society, others recognized the fundamental role that sign languages play in the cognitive development of the learner. Taking these considerations into account, the present work, based on the theoretical framework of Linguistic Historiography, aims to analyze the teaching material Pedagogia emendativa do surdomudo by Armando de Lacerda, produced in Brazil in 1934. In this context, the work is organized as follows: initially, a brief discussion is made about the theoretical concepts that helped the investigation and its methodological path is detailed; then, the historiographic moment in which Lacerda's work is inserted (1934) is contextualized; and, finally, the conceptions of language and its teaching, of sign languages, deafness, deaf subject and its teaching-learning process are analyzed.
