- Abstract
Local foods have an important place in the Turkish economy with their contribution in added value, employment and foreign trade. They contribute to women's employment, family economy and local economies through gastronomic tourism in the region where they are produced. In recent years, an increasing trend has been observed in the consumption of local foods all over the world, as well as in Turkey. The literature review reveals that although there are common factors affecting this trend, some factors differ by countries and even within the same country by regions and provinces. The aim of this research is to determine the factors affecting the consumers' decision to buy local food for Bornova and Karşıyaka districts, which are the two most populated central districts of İzmir province, and Ödemiş and Tire districts, where many local food productions are made. A 5-point Likert Scale was used to rank the factors affecting the consumers' decision to buy local food. Cronbach Alpha (Reliability Analysis) test was used to evaluate the reliability of Likert type questions. Chi-square (independence) test was used to determine whether there was a relationship between variable groups for discrete variables. According to the results of the research, the factors affecting the consumers' decision to buy local foods, in order of priority; “habit” and “local food products have geographical indication”. The judgments in which consumers show the highest participation among the judgments presented regarding local foods are that local foods are "healthy", "fresh" and "natural". These factors affecting the purchasing decision of consumers were found to be compatible with the national and international literature.
