- Abstract
In the evaluation process of social and political events, the effect of the data presented by the media on the society is significant. Because, today, media is regarded as an actor that has an effective role on determining and shaping the public interest. This study was carried out in order to reveal the role of the news found in the traditional media related to the Wise Men Committee, which was formed in April 2013 and which works actively regarding the solution of the Kurdish problem, with a Habermas sense in the context of the formation of public sphere/public opinion. In this study in which the discourse foundation of news texts is examined, the news texts that were on the traditional media between April 5, 2013 and April 20, 2013--when the discussions related to the Wise Men Committee were heavy- were analyzed with Teun A. Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis method. In this context, the Cumhuriyet newspaper was chosen to represent the secularistic/Kemalist leftists, and the Hurriyet newspaper was chosen to represent the liberal movement. The answer to the question "Does the understanding of "public sphere" appear in these texts when they are examined as a whole?" was sought after. The findings of the research revealed the leading quality of the media organs that accepted different ideologies on the society as well as mentioning the role of media on the formation of public sphere/public opinion. This situation pushes readers who follow the agenda via one single media organ to approach events from a specific perspective. The study has reached the conclusion that the Hürriyet newspaper is more balanced than the Cumhuriyet newspaper and, if it is relative, adopts a balanced journalism approach with representation of both sides of the event.
