- Abstract
In the 1990s, the Internet acquired a commercial interest that allowed its incorporation into the daily life of society, transforming sociocultural practices. Despite being a global tool, its incorporation was a heterogeneous process. For this reason, this article aims to contribute to the understanding of this global phenomenon from a local perspective studied from a traditional media. For this purpose, 66 articles from the Tapatio newspaper El Informador between 1994 and 2000 that made reference to the Internet were analyzed. A qualitative methodology was used to systematize the notes and to have a chronological narrative. From the analysis, three main themes were recognized: the participation of public and private actors in the use of the Internet; changes in sociocultural practices; and the Internet and the media. The themes allow us to explain how behavioral patterns are reproduced and transformed through a dialectical dynamic between society and the internet, creating new social dynamics resulting from the network society proposed by Manuel Castells.
