- Abstract
This research conducted to determine livability, wintering ability and weight changes of wintered 75 honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies housed in styrofoam, wood, plywood, grid plywood and insulated plywood hives at East Mediterranean coastline as dominant flowering plant species heather (Erica manipuliflora) and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) between November to March. The livability (%) of wintered honeybees were observed with values of 100, 94.44, 93.33, 88.23 and 85.00 in insulated plywood, grid plywood, styrofoam, plywood and wood material manufactured hives respectively. Average (±S.E) wintering abilities (%) were observed value of with 86.67±5.31 styrofoam, 80.61±4.23 grid plywood, 74.29±7.94 insulated plywood, 68.84±5.49 plywood and 65.89±4.19 in wood group hives (P <0.05). Research colonies gained weight average (±S.E) of 2.18±0.24 kg/colony by gathering nectar from flowers during wintering season. Weight gains were determined as average (±S.E.) 3.85±0.88, 3.21±0.54, 2.36±0.40, 1.37±0.60 and 1.22±0.27 kg/colony in insulated plywood, grid plywood, styrofoam, plywood and wood manufactured hive groups respectively (P <0.05).
