- Title
THE GENESIS OF THE BUSINESS PRESS IN THE UNITED STATES.
- Authors
Smith, Roland B.
- Abstract
The article discusses the beginnings of academic journals in the field of business in the United States. The author investigates publications from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The first businesspaper published in the United States was "The New York Prices Current," founded in 1795. "The Boston Prices Current and Marine Intelligencer, Commercial and Mercantille," later to be known as the "Boston Gazette" was also founded in 1795. The author contends that these publications were very generalized and covered all aspects of trade and commerce. More specialized publications began to appear after 1839, with the "Hunt's Merchants' Magazine And Commercial Review." By 1850, he says business journals had developed into useful tools for businesses and professional workers.
