- Abstract
Ten cases of carpal valgus deformity were observed in a feral Fallow Deer population roaming freely in a nature reserve in East-Flanders (Belgium). All animals afflicted were males, ranging in age between less than one year to more than three years old. Both forelimbs were affected in seven out of the ten cases. As genetic predisposition and hereditary factors may be contributive factors, the high incidence of valgus deviation forms a threat to further normal development of the population. Therefore, these cases and their possible impact on animal welfare are described in the present report, and measures are discussed in order to prevent the spread of this condition in the population.
