- Abstract
This article focuses on Mozambique as a battleground for the competition between liberals and evangelicals. While the U.S. government remained largely uninvolved in Mozambique's struggle for independence and civil war, the World Council of Churches (WCC) supported the anticolonial Marxist militia Frelimo, while evangelical missionaries aided the South African-backed anticommunist guerilla group Renamo, highlighting a nuanced dimension of American involvement that goes beyond Cold War simplifications or Ronald Reagan's presidency's role in mobilizing evangelicals for foreign policy support.
