- Authors
Shafi, Khalid
- Abstract
The upsurge of religious extremism in many of our societies not only poses a strong hazard and intimidation to people's lives and security but also to the consolidation of a more democratic and pluralistic political life. Religious extremism has reached an amplitude where terror reigns and solutions have become difficult to achieve through government machinery. This article examines aspects of civil society and its role in religious extremism in Pakistan with more emphasis on the post 9/1 1 era. The paper utilizes a social survey to establish links between civil society and religious extremism in Pakistan. It addresses the external threats and internal vulnerabilities, and concludes that, unless the social order of Pakistan's society is put through long term structural reforms, the menace of religious extremism cannot be eradicated.
