- Abstract
The crises, social conflicts and fractures of Turkish society find their reflection in Turkish poetry. One of the most important areas of debate in the crises that have been experienced concerns faith and the conception of God. Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu is a poet of the early Republic era. He is a multi-faceted writer of great artistic skill. His inner conflict can be traced through his works. As an intellectual who espoused the ideals of the new Republic in his poems, he frequently reflects his ideas about faith and his conception of God. Whilst Bedri Rahmi's quest provides a route to the internal, another contemporary poet, Cahit Koytak, in the manner of a complete believer, assigns a functionality to the concept of the supreme being. An inherent and transcendental conception of God and His eternal being guides Koytak in his poetry when dealing with universal and existential challenges. The works of these two poets reveal the former as a restless man who experienced belief in God as a problem, and the latter a satisfied person with his belief in God constantly in action. Studying these works persuades the reader that our poetry, far from being shallow, has a deep cultural and philosophical background.
