- Abstract
Naturally occurring analogues of curcumin from turmeric i.e., Curcuma longa, viz., feruloyl, 4-hydroxy cinnamoyl methane (FHM) and bis (4-hydroxy dn-namoyl) methane (BHM) were screened for anti-infbunmatory activity using carrageenin-induced rat paw edema and compared with sodium curcuminate (NaC) and phenylbutazone (PB). FHM was the most potent among the three curcumin analogues studied. Curcumin analogues revealed a dose-dependent effect up to the dose of 30 mg/kg. Further increase in the dose of curcumin analogues (60 mg/kg) resulted in decreased anti-inflammatory activity . PB (10-100 mg/kg) exhibited a dose-dependent effect. NaC reverdbly inhibited contractions Induced by nicotine, aretylcholioe, 5-hydroxytryptamine, histamine and barium chloride on isolated guineapig ileum in the order of decreasing potency. NaC decreased the penduiar movements and the tone of isolated rabbit Intestine. Decrease in the resting tone of rabbit intestine and comparatively greater inhibitory effect against nicotine-induced contraction on isolated guineapig ileum by NaC was similar to the action of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
