- Abstract
Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students do not always encounter a supportive learning environment. But thanks to an educational workshop at Metropolitan State University, these students are experiencing increased inclusion, acceptance, respect and support. Imagine a student whose partner is facing a medical crisis. The student wants to request an incomplete for a course but is afraid to talk to the professor or an adviser because the student's partner is of the same gender. In another scenario, think about the lesbian student who is asked to share personal information during introductions or class exercises. It can be a very threatening invitation and can raise a multitude of self-disclosure decisions. At Metropolitan State University, the Ally Program considers these situations; educates faculty and staff about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) issues; and provides them with rainbow decals, which identify them as safe contacts for GLBT students. The Ally Program is a workshop for members of the university community who wish to become recognized allies of such students. The primary goal is to create a supportive learning environment for GLBT students. The program defines an ally as a person who works toward combating homophobia, biphobia and heterosexism on both a personal and institutional level.
