- Title
New Contenders in the Editorial Systems Market.

- Abstract
The article reports that the entry of new software companies Modulo Systems Corp. and Woodwing Software in the editorial systems market has challenged the long standing monopoly of Quark Publishing System (QPS). Modulo has launched the computer program Concerto while Woodwing has launched Smart Connection Enterprise (SC Enterprise). Both Concerto and SC Enterprise are built around a true Structured Query Language (SQL) database with good support for Extended Markup Language (XML) and provide an alternative to CopyDesk and Xpress for editing and pagination. The Concerto offers a choice of CopyDesk-Xpress or InCopy-InDesign so that current Quark users can start with a Quark-based Concerto system and switch later to InDesign. SC Enterprise supports only InCopy and InDesign, but its purchase price is much lower than either Quark's software or Concerto. The era of Quark's domination is over, both in the QPS editorial system market and the Xpress pagination market. Quark will have to fight for whatever market share it can get. Adobe System Inc. is making its presence felt in pagination, and Modulo and Woodwing are doing the same with editorial systems.
