The article reflects on the 16th century conflict between Christian Europe and the Ottoman Empire in an attempt to understand the 21st century conflict between Islamic extremism and the Western world. The author discusses the history of Turks attacking Christian communities, explores the Christian responses to militant Islam, and compares these events to the terrorist attacks carried out in the U.S. on September 11, 2001.
