- Abstract
The article studies texts written by people living with breast and prostate cancer, focusing on the accounts they give of sexuality. The focal point of the study is the everyday life with cancer and the intimate role that sexuality plays in it. In daily life, sexuality is constructed through subjective and bodily experiences which are strongly influenced by culturally and socially shared meanings such as, categorizations of normative heterosexuality, hegemonic masculinities, and femininity. The accounts of sexuality intersect with practices of everyday life through the constructions of unsteady normativity of sexuality, abject sexual body, public sexuality, and intimate relationship-centric sexuality. Based on the accounts, the conclusion is that sexuality is actively present while its normative categorizations are reproduced and questioned in many ways in the everyday life with cancer. This should also be taken into account in professional encounters.
