An essay is presented on the social meaning of money in the books "The Shoemaker's Holiday," by Thomas Dekker and "The Merchant of Venice," by William Shakespeare. Topics discussed include the use of money to develop attachments and personal bonds between the Venetian Christians and the Jew, the role of money in creating and maintaining social relationships within communities, and the use of money, particularly for commercial currency.
