This article focuses on the writings of art historians Anne-Claude-Philippe, comte de Caylus and Johann Joachim Winckelmann on the Persian gems in European collections. It discusses the contribution of their writings to the construction of art history's fundamental cultural hierarchy, the art of the ancient Near East in early modern Europe, and the growth in reputations of both historians in art history.
