- Abstract
The teaching of social and cultural diversity is essential for the training and practice of psychology professionals and for the exercise of the profession. Religion and spirituality (R/S) are aspects of human diversity and therefore, require specialized clinical training. In recent years, the scientific study of R/S in psychology in Puerto Rico has increased. However, it remains to be seen whether this field of study has been transferred into academic contexts through the development of specialized courses of religious and spiritual diversity. Therefore, this article has two objectives: 1) to present a brief historical background of the teaching of religious and spiritual aspects in psychology in Puerto Rico through a study based on documentary compilation and 2) to present a descriptive review about the availability of specialized courses in aspects of religious/spiritual diversity in psychology throughout the country's universities and professional organizations. We believe this work represents an important contribution to the discipline, since it visibilizes, raises awareness and promotes specialized clinical training about R/S in the early stages of academic development.
