- Abstract
It is known that firearms started to be used in China from the end of the 13th century and these weapons were also present in the Ottoman army after the middle of the 14th century. The most remarkable of the weapons of this style, which were first used, are the cannons, which determine the outcome of the struggle on the battlefields. It is a fact that rifles, which are lighter and more useful than cannons, have been widely known and used by the Ottomans since the beginning of the 15th century. It is estimated that the first rifles, which consisted of a barrel and a firing device on a wooden fore-end, were in the form of small cannons and heavy firearms. The Ottomans used rifles called roving for many years. Since the end of the 16th century, flintlock rifles, which are more useful and modern than fused guns, have started to become widespread. Although the Ottoman army learned the first rifle samples from the west, they later made it more rapid and easy to use with various interventions and additions. It is observed that rifles invented in Europe from the beginning of the 19th century entered the inventories of the Ottoman army after a short time. Towards the end of this century, in parallel with the developing technology in the west, the types of rifles used in the Ottoman army also increased. This paper will be about the rifles used by the Ottoman army in the modernization process.
