- Abstract
Uncontaminated podzolised soils from the temperate climate zone of mixed forests of the north-eastern Ukraine (the Eastern Polissya) were assessed for chemical and thermal fractions of Hg. Most of the Hg was determined in the residual refractory material that survived harsh chemical and thermal treatments. The concentrations of Hg water-mobile and Hg volatile compounds were below the detection limit, indicating a low mobility and potential (bio)availability of Hg. The determination of Hg complexes with soil humus, both thermal release and chemical extraction, resulted in similar Hg concentrations in Sod-podzolic and Sod-carbonate podzolic soil, containing humus of the loosely condensed 'brown' type. For Chernozem podzolic soil, which contains mature, condensed and resistant 'black' humus, the levels were below the detection limit, indicating strong Hg binding. In addition, 0.1 M Na2P2O7 pH13 solution extracted higher amounts of Hg compared with 0.1 M NaOH solution, most likely as a result of Hg preferential bonding with humus stabilised/bridged to soil mineral particles through polyvalent cations. The strength of Hg bonding with soil organic matter, therefore, depends on the characteristics of organic matter in the specific soil. Soil Hg bonding/fractionation can indicate the characteristics of soil humus, namely its condensation degree, maturity and bonding type. In many fractionation variants, the results of both techniques showed good agreement.
