- Abstract
The objective of this research was to investigate the perception of micro and small entrepreneurs about the importance and contribution of intangible assets, particularly intellectual capital, in managing their business. Data were collected through a survey methodology. The population consisted of participants of the Feira do Empreendedor organized by SEBRAE in Recife/ PE in October 2012. The sample consisted of 84 micro and small enterprises entrepreneurs. Almost 90% of respondents identified themselves with a global position within the company. The research showed that half of the respondents have never heard the term capital intelectual. For the majority of respondents who have heard, the elements of intellectual capital are essential, very important or important. The results also showed that entrepreneurs who have familiarity with the terms intellectual capital and/or intangible assets tend to give higher level of importance to the elements of intellectual capital. The content analysis was shown that 47.79% of entrepreneurs believe that "products/services" and "employees" are essential to add value to the company and that these elements contribute to increase competitive advantage.
