- Abstract
The article considers the European missionary movement during the colonial period of Africa in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and its impact on African culture, especially religion. The author creates an economic model using historic information locating the sites of missions and the 2005 Afrobarometer survey of information from 17 sub-Saharan countries. Other subjects considered include the slave trade, the colonial railroad routes, agricultural areas, and the success of evangelical strategies of missionaries such as the issuance of Bibles, the creation of schools, and the establishment of hospitals.
