- Abstract
The article provides an overview of the Press Council Act, 1978 which is established to preserve freedom of the press and maintain and improve the standards of newspapers and news agencies in India. The act establishes a council named Press Council of India. Objectives and functions of the council include the preservation of the freedom of the press, help newspapers and news agencies in maintaining their independence and foster a due sense of the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. Details regarding the general powers of the council as well as its funds and budget are also discussed.
