- Abstract
The article discusses the service of the Utah volunteer artillerymen, who were part of army units known as Utah Batteries, during the Spanish-American and the Philippine-American Wars from 1898 to 1899. An overview of the U.S.'s expansionist policy in the late 19th century, including the overthrow of Hawaiian Queen Liliuokalani, is provided. An overview of the Filipino Army of Liberation under the command of the nationalist Emilio Aguinaldo is also provided. The article discusses the relationship between the Utah soldiers' confronting of a foreign enemy and Utah's late 19th century history of social and political discord between Utah's Mormon and non-Mormon population.
