- Abstract
This study examines the impact of new governance requirements in a comply-or-explain regime. Firm compliance is examined, and the relationship between firms' governance practices and financial performance is investigated. Using data from the 2003-2007 period, a significant increase in governance scores is found with the June 2005 introduction of the new Canadian governance requirements. In addition, the study finds the link between corporate governance and firm performance weakens after the introduction of the new guidelines.
