- Abstract
This is part of a series of "Notes on Qing Political History" that discusses how Qing scholarship has been enriched by new social and cultural research methods, academic exchanges abroad, and cross-disciplinary research. This article takes a broader point of view in which Qing rulers might have considered effective government as an indicator of success in the long span of dynastic cycles under the concept of "all under heaven." The author presents an overview of previous discussions of this idea of "da tongyi" -- great unity -- in order to reevaluate the criteria of judgment of Ming and Qing comparisons.
