The article discusses composer Richard Wagner's opera "Lohengrin" and poets Algernon Charles Swinburne and Emily Pfeiffer's short lyric poems on the opera's instrumental Prelude. Topics covered include the aesthetic of spiritual origin in the Prelude, Swinburne's affirmation of the transcendent effect of the Wagnerian aesthetic through repeating forms and aural effects and anxiety that the music provoked.
