- Authors
Moreau, Jacqueline
- Abstract
This article from Columbia: The Magazine of Northwest History provides a portrait of David Sohappy, a Wanapum treaty rights activist and spiritual leader among the River People of the mid-Columbia River. The River People, including the Yakama, Warm Springs, Umatilla, and Nez Perce tribes, reside on their homelands and follow unwritten laws passed down from their ancestors. Sohappy played a significant role in the United States vs. Oregon case in 1969, which resulted in a historic ruling that allowed tribes to continue fishing along the Columbia River. The article also highlights Sohappy's activism, including his involvement in the Salmon Scam case and his fight against eviction notices served to Indians along the mid-Columbia.
