- Abstract
This article provides a biography of Gene Kritsky, a well-known entomologist and biology professor. Kritsky's research focuses on various topics such as the evolution of cicadas, the history of beekeeping, Charles Darwin's contributions to entomology, insects in art history and Egyptology, and the distribution of tiger beetles. He has written numerous books and articles on these subjects and has received recognition for his work. The article includes an interview with Kritsky, where he discusses his passion for natural history, his research on bee boles in Scotland, and offers advice to biology students and young faculty members. The text also features an interview with Marlin E. Rice, a retired biology professor known for his expertise in cicadas. Rice shares his experiences as a Fulbright scholar in Egypt, including visits to archaeological sites and covering the funeral of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. He also discusses his research on cicadas, including the discovery of a thirteen-year brood in Ohio and efforts to predict their emergence. Rice highlights the impact of cicadas on student enrollment at Mount St. Joseph University and talks about his retirement and the future of higher education.
