- Abstract
This article examines the teaching of gender and communication by highlighting students' responses to course issues. Overall, students respond well to the research on gender differences and do not resist the material. However, much of the research does not critically question the relationship between research findings and the socio-political contexts in which gender differences become comprehensible. An exploration and valuation of women's communication does not suggest that women's experiences and communication strategies are better than men's but rather presents women's experiences as valid and complex. The material the students read and the student responses to the material clearly reflect the interconnection between the personal, social and political. A course on gender and communication will enable students to see the connections between theoretical material and lived-world experience and teach students that they do not have to passively accept sexist, racist and classist stereotypes.
