- Title
ELIMINATING SEXIST LANGUAGE IN THE CLASSROOM.
- Authors
Webb, Lynne
- Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to present eight pedagogical strategies that are helpful in persuading students to use nonsexist language in written and oral classroom performances. The strategies are based upon commonly held assumptions about language. They are designed for professors with limited class time to discuss sexist language in their skills-oriented communication classes. The ability to employ nonsexist vocabulary in an articulate manner is, quite simply, a communication skill. Individuals rarely discuss nonsexist language per se, more typically, they air views on the issues of nonsexist language. Some argue that nonsexist language is a "pop" idea that threatens the integrity of the English language.
