- Abstract
The empirical concern of the book - the relationship between the elite golf player and the relatively underprivileged caddy - is one example of the dynamic of spatial propinquity. As the author notes, caddies received knowledge of English, class etiquette, and other symbolic markers of status. On the other hand, the author demonstrates how the whimsical relationship of dependence on club members was oppressive and precarious for the caddies and resulted in a deep irony and a stalemate: by refusing caddies the full rights of casual or contract laborers, members more or less guaranteed that caddies would turn to them for assistance (p. 52).
