- Abstract
The article focuses on the everincreasing interest in science at the elementary level in the U.S. and the guidance extended by the Yearbook "Science Education in American Schools," to those concerned with administering the science program at the elementary level. There is an increased emphasis on the importance of the use of community resource in teaching elementary science. The total community as a source of useful materials arid information is emphasized. There is a very practical section devoted to methods of obtaining materials of instruction which will be useful to school systems that feel that lack of equipment is one of their chief handicaps. The institutions that train teachers to instruct in the elementary school are not are not at present offering sufficient courses of the proper content to fit the classroom teachers to assume adequately the responsibility for science teaching. Furthermore, the student should be given opportunity to become acquainted with text books and other literature written for children and to learn about sources of materials.
