- Authors

- Abstract
The article discusses the use of the compound term hapax legomenon æ-becn in a gloss to an Old English manuscript translation of the book "Historia ecclesiastica" by Bede. The etymology of the term from Latin is mentioned, as well as references from the book to phylacteries, or religious charms, and the life of Saint Cuthbert. Variant manuscripts, the handwriting for the gloss, and references to the Biblical Book of Matthew are discussed, as well as Jewish tefillin, Christian reliquaries, and Old English dictionaries.
