- Abstract
The article discusses the terms and phrases used in William Shakespeare's "Othello." In writing Othello, Shakespeare was moved to investigate Venetian and Turkish affairs more closely because of King James' interest in the Turks and he reproduces as a probable source extracts from "The General Hisiorie of the Turkes" written by Richard Knolles and published in 1603. It is clear that there would be special aptness and irony in Othello's use of terms, indicative of contempt and in use among his Turkish enemies, at the very point when he has just been deprived of his command against the Turks.
