- Abstract
The article examines the practice of infant abandonment in Old Norse society as a means to investigate the level of stigma associated with disfigurement and deformity. The author does so through an examination of Norwegian and Icelandic Christian laws dealing with the abandonment of infants with congenital deformities. Focus is given to the ways in which concerns over supernatural forces influenced infant abandonment laws.
