- Abstract
Objective: Summarizing known information about applicability of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) in patients with Tourette Syndrome (TS) and evaluate effectiveness and risks involved in performing procedure in children and adults. Methods: The study is an Overview of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, which sought to synthesize information from recent systematic reviews on the use of DBS in patients with TS. The MEDLINE, Web of Science and Scopus databases were used with articles published in the last 10 years in English and Portuguese. Results: A total of 9 articles were included from which the rates of improvement in tic control, complications involving implants and surgery, and side effects were evaluated. All studies identified an average reduction in tics with the use of DBS. Among the main complications were bleeding, infections and implant problems. Several neurological side effects such as nausea, lethargy, anxiety, visual dysfunction, paresthesia and even cases of worsening tics have been reported. Conclusion: DBS is a treatment which has high potential in controlling TS symptoms, but the high risk of complications and side effects makes it difficult to recommend. Current studies are still insufficient to guarantee safe use of DBS in non-experimental cases.
