- Abstract
The main objective of this article is to understand the role played by the Catholic Church in the elaboration of an ideal immigrant model that could be used to expand and consolidate religion, trying to understand how the process of formation of a peculiar work culture took place in some cities in the state of Espirito Santo (Brazil) colonized by Italian immigrants. It is a reflexive theoretical study, based on critical reading in literary, academic and scientific studies, starting with the Master's thesis: Catholic Ethics and Work Culture: A Reflection upon Italian Immigration in the State of Espírito Santo (SALLES, 2011). It was found through the different sources of research that foreign immigration to Brazil and specifically to Espírito Santo was symbolically supported by the possibility of the worker's ascension to a landowner status, and that the Italian immigrant was the human agent of the realization of the ideology of the transformation of the worker into proprietor, molded in that process by the action of the Catholic Church with ultramontane foundations.
