- Abstract
The article discusses the Oka Crisis land dispute between Mohawk Indians and the Canadian government in 1990, exploring the ways in which the crisis illustrated the tensions regarding land use by indigenous peoples over three centuries in Quebec. The article describes the land grants offered to the Sulpician Fathers monastic order in the early 18th century that broached Mohawk land, the demand by Mohawk representative Joseph Onasakenrat to return the land to Mohawks, and the reporting of the newspaper "L'Opinion publique" in 1877.
